People’s perceptions of life in Hong Kong

dez21 Hong Kong, named the  most liveable city  in the world in 2012 by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), topped the ranking of 140 global cities mainly thanks to a special weighting in the index for the city’s green space, lack of sprawl, natural assets and connectivity.  However, liveability should also take into account local people’s perceptions. Thus, “perceived liveability” can give more of an indication about the reasons for residents to stay in a city. Different from the EIU’s index, the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies has been tracking perceived liveability in Hong Kong since 2017.  The annual perceived liveability index asks respondents to evaluate the liveability of Hong Kong on a range of 0 to 100, with 50 being a pass. In the first two years of the survey, the average of the scores were above 60 and did not change much. However, it slid to 54.4 in September 2019 amid the height of the  anti-extradition bill movement . The index moved further down, to 49.6

jan22 Hong Kong’s new legislature is a mockery of democracy. “Democracy in Hong Kong is flourishing.” These words, used by the Chinese Communist Party in a recent white paper, suggest a strange definition of democracy. On January 3rd lawmakers newly elected to the territory’s Legislative Council took their oaths. Not since long before China regained control of the former British colony have the body’s members been more pliant . All but one of the 90 councillors are party supporters . China made sure of that. https://www.economist.com/leaders/hong-kongs-new-legislature-is-a-mockery-of-democracy/21807016 dez21 Who is Tik Chi-yuen?  dez21 KPMG is one of several big businesses in Hong Kong encouraging staff to vote in what the government is billing as a “patriots-only” election for the city’s legislature, as authorities worry about low turnout in the poll. The Big Four auditing firm has offered staff an extra day off if they exercise their “privilege to vote” in the elections on Sunday for the Legislative Council, Hong Kong’s de facto parliament, according to an internal email seen by the Financial Times. “Colleagues who have voted will be asked to complete a simple online application to indicate that they are eligible voters and have voted,” KPMG said in the email on Tuesday. KPMG did not respond to a request for comment. https://techilive.in/kpmg-among-businesses-backing-hong-kongs-patriots-election/
